Hue Imperial City: Tickets, Hours and How to See It Well

A ticket to the Hue Imperial City costs VND 200,000 for adults and VND 40,000 for children aged 7 to 12 in 2026, with under-7s free; it opens around 7 am to 5 pm in the cooler months and 6.30 am to 5.30 pm in the hot season, and a good visit takes two to three hours. Enter through Ngo Mon, the Noon Gate, on the south side.

There is no regular night opening: the palace opens after dark only for events such as Festival Hue. From Ancient Hue in Kim Long, Ngo Mon is a 2.7 km drive, roughly 13 minutes by bicycle.

Hue Imperial City tickets and combo prices in 2026

Ticket prices are set by the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre and, unlike at many Asian palaces, are the same for Vietnamese and foreign visitors. The figures below come from 2026 price lists published by local tour operators and travel sites between April and August 2026; all agree on the Imperial City and combo prices.

Children under seven go in free with an adult. Single tombs (Tu Duc, Minh Mang, Khai Dinh) are VND 150,000 each, so the four-site combo saves VND 120,000 per adult against separate tickets.

Is a combo ticket worth it?

Only if you will really see the tombs within two days. Tu Duc is the easy one from Kim Long, 4.4 km by road; Khai Dinh (10.1 km) and Minh Mang (13.2 km) need a car or a long ride, and most people manage two tombs in an afternoon, not three. A sensible plan is the Imperial City in the morning, then two tombs the next day on a three-site combo.

Where to buy

Counters stand in front of Ngo Mon on 23 Thang 8 Street. You can also buy online through the conservation centre’s e-ticket website or the Hue-S city app and scan a QR code at the gate, which saves queuing on weekends and Vietnamese holidays. A paper ticket bought at the counter is valid only on that day, so buy it on the morning you go.

Opening hours, and whether it opens at night

Hours follow two seasons. In the hot months the gates open around 6.30 am and close around 5.30 pm; from mid-October to mid-March, plan on 7 am to 5 pm. Late arrivals get rushed, so be through the gate by 3 pm at the latest.

Night openings are events, not a routine

A daily night programme ran in 2017, but it did not last. In 2026 the palace opened after dark only for set events: during Festival Hue it was free from 25 to 28 April, with torch-lit Trung Dao Bridge, 3D projections on Ngo Mon and a staged court audience in front of Thai Hoa Palace (Vietnam+, March and April 2026). Night openings around Lunar New Year have run from 7 to 10 pm. Outside those dates, the walls close at dusk; the floodlit Ngo Mon and Flag Tower are still worth seeing from the square.

The best time of day and year

Arrive at opening or after about 2.30 pm. Day-trip coaches from Da Nang and Hoi An tend to reach the gate mid-morning, and the stone courtyards hold the heat at midday. February to April is the comfortable season; May to August regularly reaches the high 30s°C, and October is Hue’s wettest month, with travel guides putting average rainfall around 600 mm.

Citadel, Imperial City, Forbidden Purple City: what you are actually visiting

Three walled rings sit one inside the other, and the names get mixed up. The Citadel (Kinh Thanh) is the outer fortress, about 2 km on each side with a moat and 10 km of walls; people live inside it, and entry is free. The Imperial City (Hoang Thanh, or Dai Noi) is the ticketed palace enclosure in its centre, with walls about 600 m long on each side. Inside that sits the Forbidden Purple City (Tu Cam Thanh), once the emperor’s private quarters.

The Nguyen dynasty built the complex from 1805, and the present layout dates from Minh Mang’s rebuilding in 1833. Thirteen emperors were crowned in Thai Hoa Palace until Bao Dai abdicated in 1945. UNESCO listed the Complex of Hue Monuments in 1993.

Why parts of it look empty

Fighting in 1947 burned much of the core, and the 1968 Battle of Hue did more damage: of some 160 buildings, only around ten major ones survived intact. Restoration is slow and careful. Kien Trung Palace, Khai Dinh’s 1920s European-influenced pavilion, reopened at Lunar New Year 2024 after five years’ work costing over VND 123 billion. Thai Hoa Palace reopened on 23 November 2024 after a three-year restoration of nearly VND 129 billion.

A route through the Imperial City that works

Most visitors walk straight up the central axis and miss the best-preserved corners on the sides. This loop, entering at Ngo Mon and leaving by Hien Nhon Gate on the east wall, covers the highlights in about two and a half hours.

Duyet Thi Duong stages short nha nhac court-music shows, usually at 10 am and 3 pm, for about VND 300,000 a seat on top of the entrance ticket, and only when at least ten tickets sell (2025 reports). Costume hire for photographs in royal dress runs roughly VND 100,000–200,000. The covered galleries around the Forbidden Purple City are the only real shade, so carry water and a hat.

Getting there from Kim Long

Ancient Hue sits in Kim Long, on the north bank of the Perfume River upstream of the Citadel. The drive to Ngo Mon is 2.7 km: along Pham Thi Lien and Van Xuan, over the Kim Long Bridge onto Le Duan, then into the Citadel through Quang Duc Gate. Our location guide lists the other distances from the lane.

WayDistanceTimeCost
Grab car (4 seats)2.7 km5–10 minAbout VND 35,000 base fare
Bicycle2.8 kmAbout 13 minBicycles for guests at the hotel
On foot2.9 kmAbout 40 minFree

The Grab figure uses the July 2026 Hue fare table, an opening fare of VND 27,000 covering 2 km plus VND 12,175 for each extra km, before peak surcharges. Cycling is flat the whole way, but Le Duan is a busy main road, so keep to the edge. Whether bicycles are free, and how many there are, is on request — ask the hotel when you book. Walking works in the cool months; in summer, ride in and walk back along the river after 4 pm.

A one-day plan from the hotel

Leave at 7 am for the Imperial City, take lunch near Dong Ba Market or in the Citadel, rest through the heat at the hotel, then walk the 2.6 km upstream to Thien Mu Pagoda for the late light over the river. Back in Kim Long for dinner, the royal-style Kim Long Fine Dining is in the garden; see the dining guide.

Honest noteExpect lawns and foundations where many palaces stood: wartime losses mean large parts of the Forbidden Purple City are open ground, and first-time visitors who picture Beijing come away underwhelmed. There is little shade between buildings, so midday in summer is hard work. And from Kim Long the gate is 40 minutes on foot along busy roads, so in practice you will take a car or a bicycle; you cannot simply step out of the door into the Citadel.
Gates open around 6.30–7 am

See the palace early, then sit out the afternoon heat by the pool.

After a morning of open courtyards, two outdoor pools and the Phu Xuan Spa wait in the hotel garden.

Questions about the Hue Imperial City

Do foreigners pay more for the Hue Imperial City?

No. The 2026 ticket is VND 200,000 for every adult, Vietnamese or foreign, and VND 40,000 for children aged 7 to 12. Only Vietnamese citizens get free entry on a handful of national days, such as 2 September, and Hue residents and some students receive a 50% reduction.

Is the Hue Imperial City open at night?

Not routinely. In 2026 it opened after dark only for events: free from 25 to 28 April during Festival Hue, and for evening programmes around Lunar New Year. On ordinary days it closes at about 5 or 5.30 pm, depending on the season, though you can see the floodlit Ngo Mon from the square outside.

Is the four-site combo ticket worth buying?

It saves VND 120,000 per adult if you visit all three tombs, but the ticket lasts two days and Minh Mang and Khai Dinh are 13 and 10 km from Kim Long. For most people the three-site combo, VND 420,000, with the Imperial City and two tombs, is easier to use in full.

How do I get from Ancient Hue to the Imperial City?

Take a Grab car or a bicycle. The route is 2.7 km by road over the Kim Long Bridge and through Quang Duc Gate, about 5 to 10 minutes by car for roughly VND 35,000 at July 2026 base fares, or about 13 minutes on a flat bike ride. Walking takes about 40 minutes.

What is the best time of day to visit?

Go at opening time or after 2.30 pm. Day-trip coaches from Da Nang and Hoi An usually arrive mid-morning, and the stone courtyards are hottest around noon. An early start also lets you catch the 10 am court-music show before lunch.
